SRINAGAR: Ghulam Qadir Kawoosa, a pioneering entrepreneur, a multi-millionaire and a respected figure in Kashmir’s economic and cultural landscape, passed away late Wednesday night at 88. Kawoosa, originally from Nowhatta in Srinagar and later residing in Nishat, left behind a legacy of innovation and dedication that has profoundly impacted the region.

His funeral prayers were offered at Jamia Masjid in the afternoon and later he was laid to rest at their ancestral graveyard.
Kawoosa began his career in the family’s textile trading business, with their shops located at Zainakadal. In the 1970s, he diversified into the industrial sector, establishing several steel-based industrial units at the Baghi Ali Mardan Khan industrial estate. His ventures didn’t stop there; he ventured into the manufacturing of carpets, where he excelled, bringing global recognition to Kashmiri craftsmanship.
In the early 1960s, Kawoosa further cemented his place in Srinagar’s history by establishing the Firdous Cinema Hall at Hawal, a landmark in the city. His family is also known for owning large swathes of land in Srinagar and operating the prestigious GD Goenka Public Schools. Apart from Nowhatta, the family owns at least two major commercial buildings in Lal Chowk.
Kawoosa is survived by his two sons, Imtiyaz Ahmad Kawoosa and Bilal Ahmad Kawoosa, who continue to uphold the family’s entrepreneurial spirit.
The Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) expressed deep sorrow over Kawoosa’s passing. In a statement, FCIK described him as a trailblazer among the first generation of entrepreneurs in Kashmir post-1947, noting his success across various ventures.
“His significant contributions are remembered with deep respect and admiration. Kawoosa was instrumental in advancing Kashmiri handicrafts, bringing the region’s rich artisanal traditions to the global stage,” said FCIK President Shahid Kamili. Kamili also highlighted Kawoosa’s efforts in promoting and elevating Kashmiri craftsmanship, as well as his role in enhancing the region’s economic stature through diverse manufacturing and service sector initiatives.
Beyond his business achievements, Kawoosa was also a visionary in education. He founded one of Srinagar’s most esteemed schools, which has become a cornerstone of high-quality education in the region, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
The FCIK’s Advisory Committee, including members Shakeel Qalander, M.D Qureshi, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, and Mohammad Ashraf Mir, extended their deepest sympathies to Kawoosa’s family and associates during this period of profound grief. They emphasized that Kawoosa’s enduring legacy in entrepreneurship, cultural promotion, and educational enhancement would be cherished and remembered by all touched by his work and vision.
