SRINAGAR: As Eid-ul-Adha approached, preparations gathered pace across Kashmir. One of the most significant festivals in Islam, Eid-ul-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) readiness to sacrifice his son in submission to divine command. The occasion emphasises faith, sacrifice, and compassion.

In Kashmir, the festival is marked with enthusiasm. Families begin preparations days in advance, and the centrepiece of these arrangements is the sacrificial animal. The Eidgah grounds in Srinagar, among the largest animal markets in the region, once again transformed into a bustling hub for livestock trading. Hundreds of sellers arrived with goats and sheep brought from across India, especially Rajasthan. Prices typically ranged from Rs 350 to 400 per kilogram, depending on breed, size, and weight.

Despite steady activity, vendors voiced serious concerns about the poor infrastructure. One seller pointed to the lack of washrooms, proper drainage, and damaged roads. He said the recent rains had left the market waterlogged and muddy, making it difficult for buyers to walk through and inspect the animals.

Yet, the market remained crowded, with residents arriving in large numbers ahead of Eid, which would be observed on July 07.

The scene at Eidgah was marked by the sound of bleating animals and animated bargaining. While the pre-Eid atmosphere was lively, the absence of basic facilities remained a pressing concern, especially during peak hours.

Authorities issued guidelines urging people to maintain hygiene and dispose of animal waste responsibly.
