A lifelong motorcyclist recounts his first Himalayan trek to Draktolan, discovering fitness, teamwork, resilience and a deeper connection with nature.

Adventure has always been an integral part of my life and a passion that has taken me across some of the most challenging and breathtaking landscapes of India. Over the years, I have completed several adventurous motorcycle expeditions, including the prestigious K2K (Kashmir to Kanyakumari) ride, journeys through the rugged terrain of Ladakh, and crossings of many high-altitude mountain passes in Jammu and Kashmir. My travel experiences and travelogues have been published in various reputed newspapers and magazines, allowing me to share the spirit of adventure with a wider audience.
Despite years of exploring the world on two wheels, I recently experienced a completely new dimension of adventure, trekking. On June 15, 2026, I embarked on my first-ever trekking expedition to the enchanting Draktolan Meadows of Yousmarg, organised by the Elite Fitness Adventurous Club, Rahmoo, under the leadership of Muqeet Fayaz Wani, owner of Elite Fitness Gym, Rahmoo. This memorable journey marked the beginning of a new chapter in my adventurous life and offered lessons far beyond physical endurance.
The inspiration behind this trek came from my close friend, Altaf Ahmad Rather, whose passion for fitness and adventure motivated me to step outside my comfort zone as a rider and embrace trekking. He encouraged me to join Elite Fitness Gym, Rahmoo, and entrusted me with the responsibility of leading and organising the NMBA Trek to Draktolan. Though trekking was a new experience for me, I accepted the challenge to promote fitness, adventure and positive living among young people.
The much-awaited day finally arrived with excitement and enthusiasm. At 6.00 a.m., a group of fifteen energetic participants assembled at Elite Fitness Gym, Rahmoo, and departed for Yousmarg. After a brief halt at Pakherpora to purchase food supplies and refreshments, we continued our journey through the picturesque landscapes of Budgam district and reached Yousmarg at around 7.00 a.m.

Often referred to as the Meadow of Jesus, Yousmarg is one of Kashmir’s most beautiful and serene tourist destinations. Nestled amidst dense pine and fir forests, rolling green meadows, sparkling streams and majestic mountain peaks, it offers visitors an unparalleled experience of nature’s beauty. While Yousmarg itself is a popular destination, only a few adventure enthusiasts venture further to explore its hidden treasures, such as Draktolan.
At approximately 7.30 a.m., our trekking expedition commenced. The trail led us through thick forests, lush grasslands and scenic mountain pathways. The fresh mountain air, the melodious chirping of birds and the soothing sound of flowing streams created an atmosphere of tranquillity and peace. Every step brought new panoramic views and strengthened our determination to reach our destination.
Draktolan is one of the most picturesque alpine meadows in Yousmarg and remains largely unexplored compared with many other trekking destinations in Kashmir. Surrounded by pristine wilderness, the meadow is blessed with vast stretches of green pastures, crystal-clear springs, colourful wildflowers and breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The untouched beauty of Draktolan makes it a paradise for trekkers, nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers. Standing amidst its expansive grasslands, one feels completely immersed in nature’s grandeur and serenity.
Although the trek covered nearly nine kilometres of mountainous terrain, the extraordinary enthusiasm and teamwork displayed by all the participants made the journey remarkably enjoyable. Every member supported and motivated the others throughout the expedition. Whenever the trail became challenging, words of encouragement and collective determination helped us move forward. This spirit of unity transformed a demanding trek into an inspiring experience of friendship and cooperation.

After nearly two hours of trekking, we reached Upper Draktolan at around 9.30 a.m. The sight that greeted us was truly mesmerising. Endless green meadows stretched before us while majestic mountains stood silently in the background. The cool breeze, the unspoilt natural surroundings and the complete absence of urban noise created a sense of calm that refreshed both body and mind.
The meadow provided the perfect setting for relaxation, exploration and reflection. Participants spent time enjoying the magnificent scenery, capturing memorable photographs and appreciating the unique beauty of Kashmir’s natural heritage. Such experiences remind us of the importance of preserving these pristine landscapes for future generations.
One of the highlights of the expedition was the preparation of a community meal amidst nature. Working together as a team, participants cooked rice and shared lunch in the heart of the meadow. The simple meal tasted extraordinary in the fresh mountain environment and strengthened the bonds of friendship among all members of the group.
Beyond its recreational value, the trek served as a powerful reminder of the importance of fitness and outdoor activities. In an era when many young people are increasingly drawn towards sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy habits, initiatives like these provide a positive alternative. Trekking promotes physical fitness, mental well-being, self-confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork and environmental awareness.

After spending several memorable hours amidst the breathtaking surroundings of Draktolan, we began our return journey at around 2.30 p.m. Carrying unforgettable memories, renewed energy and a stronger sense of camaraderie, we trekked back to Yousmarg and safely returned home.
As someone who has spent years exploring distant landscapes on a motorcycle, this first trekking experience taught me valuable lessons. Riding offers freedom and exploration, but trekking provides a deeper connection with nature, a greater appreciation of teamwork and an opportunity for self-discovery. The journey to Draktolan was not merely a trek across mountains; it was a journey of inspiration, leadership, endurance and personal growth.
The success of this expedition stands as a shining example of how adventure, fitness and collective effort can inspire positive change in society. It is hoped that many more young people will come forward to embrace such activities, discover the hidden treasures of Kashmir and contribute towards building a healthier and more vibrant community.
