SRINAGAR: A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island on Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to launch assessments amid concerns over possible aftershocks, though no immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received.
According to seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake’s epicentre was located about 42 kilometres southeast of the city of Palu on Sulawesi Island at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said the quake occurred at coordinates 1.073° South latitude and 120.263° East longitude. Owing to its relatively shallow depth, the tremor was likely felt strongly across the affected region.
Emergency authorities remained on alert and began evaluating the impact of the earthquake, while monitoring agencies continued to watch for aftershocks.
Indonesia, an archipelagic nation situated on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the interaction of multiple tectonic plates beneath the region.
In a separate seismic event, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from that quake either.
Further assessments are underway in both regions as officials continue to monitor the situation.
