SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police wasn’t fighting against the gun-wielding militants only but also the false narrative being spread by hundreds of fake social media handles of which 8000 were identified in 2023, which are tasked to incite trouble and glorify militancy, Director General of Police, RR Swain, said on Saturday.

“We distinguish between genuine and non-genuine accounts, taking legal action under the IT Act 61. If necessary, we’ll pursue them internationally through Interpol,”  he said.

Concerning narco-terrorism, DGP Swain highlighted the global connections revealed in Turkey, Canada, and Paris.  He commented, “In 2024, we anticipate a decisive battle against narco-terrorism. The links between narco-terror, separatism, and terrorism were exposed in 2023. We’ve found links in Kashmir, Jammu, Punjab, and Delhi, with handlers traced in Paris, Canada, and Turkey. In the recent Ramban narco-terror module, the mastermind was located in Turkey.”

Addressing cybercrime, DGP Swain acknowledged the under-reporting of such crimes, revealing, “Police are aware that cybercrime affects more people than reported. We’re upgrading our systems to effectively combat cybercrimes. Significant amounts have been traced and returned to victims of internet and digital frauds.”
