SRINAGAR: In a major push to strengthen the education sector in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday handed over appointment letters to 117 newly selected school lecturers and announced a full tuition fee waiver for students from Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families.

The announcements were made during the Education Conclave 2026, themed “Buniyaad Se Bulandi Tak”, organised by Samagra Shiksha along with the Departments of School and Higher Education.
The appointment of 117 lecturers marks the revival of recruitment to school lecturer posts in the Education Department after several years.
Fulfilling a commitment made in the Budget 2026, the Chief Minister announced a 100 per cent tuition fee waiver for AAY students studying in government schools and colleges, aimed at making education more accessible for economically weaker sections.
During the conclave, Abdullah also inaugurated 2,109 education sector projects worth over Rs 115 crore. The initiatives include upgraded infrastructure, digital learning facilities, a virtual classroom studio and a high-tech auditorium at Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu.
The Chief Minister also felicitated 67 meritorious students from schools and colleges and honoured National Award-winning teachers for their contribution to the education sector.
Earlier, Abdullah inspected exhibition stalls displaying student innovations, institutional reforms and technology-driven initiatives. He praised students for developing innovative ideas, including patents and start-up projects, saying such efforts reflected how quality education and technology could address real-life challenges.
Highlighting the role of teachers in nation-building, the Chief Minister described them as the foundation of every profession and said the government would continue working to improve educational infrastructure, support teachers and create better learning opportunities across Jammu and Kashmir.
He also appreciated Education Minister Sakina Itoo for introducing reforms and key interventions in the sector, assuring continued investment in institutional development and quality education.
“I leave this conclave with renewed confidence in the future of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Chief Minister said.
