Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving Pakistani gunman, involved in Mumbai attack 2008, was hanged to death on Wednesday morning, at the Yerawada central prison, Pune.
RR Patil, Maharashtra home minister was quoted saying, “Kasab was hanged at 7.30am and Pakistan government was kept informed about the execution.”
As the news of Ajmal’s death reached valley, some of the locals from Maisuma area in Srinagar burnt tyers in order to mark their protest against the hanging of Kasab. Some shopkeepers in the area lowered their shutters fearing protests to escalate in Srinagar.
Kasab was arrested soon after the attack in Mumbai in which around 166 people were killed in 60 hour siege which began on the night of November 26, 2008. He was lodged in the Arthur Jail Road in Mumbai since his arrest. Kasab was convicted and given capital punishment by the trial court on May 6, 2010 which was upheld by the Bombay High Court on February 21, 2011. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the sentence on August 29 this year.
According to media reports Kasab was hanged after Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea.
