Kashmir valley observes a shutdown on Thursday to mark the fourth death anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged in Tihar jail on February 9, 2013.
The resistance leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have called for a valley wide shutdown to protest against the hanging of Guru and to demand return of his mortal remains.
Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces, have been deployed across the Srinagar city and major towns of Sopore, Baramulla, Palhallan, Bijbehara, Shopian and Pulwama.
Severe restrictions have been imposed in and around downtown Srinagar. Forces also imposed restrictions on the movement of people in city centre Lal Chowk and adjoining areas.
Shops, educational institutes and all other business establishments are shut while public and private transport is majorly from the roads.
Afzal, from North Kashmir’s Sopore, was hanged on Feb 9, 2011 at Tihar jail for his alleged role in 2001 parliament attacks. He lays buried inside the jail and his family has been demanding his mortal remains.
