SRINAGAR

Hundreds of students in Kashmir University Friday protested against the proposed Zubin Mehta concert in Srinagar. The protesters alleging the concert “an Indian attempt to mislead the world” raised slogans like “Go India go back”.

Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani had called for anti-Zubin concert protests after Friday prayers.

Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani sees the event as an attempt to give legitimacy to “Indian rule” in Kashmir. The octogenarian has called for a shutdown against it on Saturday.

The students assembled after the prayers and held strong protests. “Despite Indian efforts we will never ever forget our martyrs and the ongoing movement which is aimed at freedom,” a protester said.

Holding banners and placards, the protesting students later dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the entire Kashmir Valley, especially in the summer capital of the state in the wake of Saturday’s planned concert (Feel of Kashmir) by the Bavarian State Orchestra and Indian-born conductor Zubin Mehta.

The concert is the first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and will see an audience of 1,500 guests, including ministers, diplomats, Industrialists, sports and Bollywood stars.

A group of civil society has decided to conduct a parallel concert (Reality of Kashmir) on the same day.
