Arrest Of Youth Triggers Violent Clashes In North Kashmir

Clashes erupted between people and police in North Kashmir’s Palhalan area of Pattan town when at least three thousand people blocked the Srinagar Muzafarabad road after the arrest of a shopkeeper by Army and Police on Saturday.

Sources told CNS that in a joint operation, Army personnel from 29 RR and police raided the shop of one Nazir Ahmed Tantray son of Ghulam Mohi-u-Din and lodged him police station Pattan after his arrest.

As the word about the joint raid spread in the area, hundreds of people came on roads and raised pro-freedom slogans. The agitated protestors blocked the road and disrupted the vehicular movement.

Protestors alleged that police and Army have let loose a reign of terror in the town and are arresting youth without any reason. “Scores of youth are languishing in the police stations and I can give you proof how police is minting money from the arrested youth,” one of the protestors told CNS.

The protestors raised anti-Army and anti-police slogans and burnt down tyres on roads. Large contingents of police and CRPF personnel was deployed in the area to disperse the protestors. Police used tear smoke shells. However, the protestors did not budge and resorted to heavy stone-pelting. The clashes were on till this report was being filed.

Reports said that at least three youth including an Army jawan was injured in the clashes.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir J.P.Singh told CNS that the arrested person is involved in multiple cases. “Why should we arrest an innocent person. This fellow is involved in so many militancy related activities. He is behind every stone-pelting incident occurred in Palhalan area as he distributes money amoung youth and instigate them for stone-pelting,” Singh said adding that the police have ample evidences to prove his involvement.

A police official told CNS that at least 8 FIR’s have been registered against Nazir Ahmed Tantray this year for disrupting peace in the area. “We have registered at least 8 FIR numbers vide 26, 27,29,32,46,47,89,182/2013 against him and he has been charged under section 307,332 and 427 of RPC,” he said.
