Clashes erupted between people and police in North Kashmir’s Palhalan area of Pattan town when at least three thousand people blocked the Srinagar Muzafarabad road after the arrest of a shopkeeper by Army and Police on Saturday.

Sources told CNS that in a joint operation, Army personnel from 29 RR and police raided the shop of one Nazir Ahmed Tantray son of Ghulam Mohi-u-Din and lodged him police station Pattan after his arrest.

As the word about the joint raid spread in the area, hundreds of people came on roads and raised pro-freedom slogans. The agitated protestors blocked the road and disrupted the vehicular movement.

The protestors raised anti-Army and anti-police slogans and burnt down tyres on roads. Large contingents of police and CRPF personnel was deployed in the area to disperse the protestors. Police used tear smoke shells. However, the protestors did not budge and resorted to heavy stone-pelting. The clashes were on till this report was being filed.
