“Climate change is a huge challenge, and the responsibility lies on SKUAST (Kashmir and Jammu) to assist our farmers in adapting to these changes. We can no longer rely solely on rain and snowfall as climate patterns have drastically shifted. Snowfall that once arrived in December now comes in February, and temperatures are rising. To adapt, we need to promote modern techniques and raise awareness among farmers,” the Chief Minister said.

Expressing his admiration for the university’s progress, Omar Abdullah applauded SKUAST-Jammu for its remarkable advancements since his last visit. He also released several books on agriculture and research during the event and commended progressive farmers from the Jammu division for their contributions to the sector.

Highlighting the untapped potential of agriculture and allied sectors, he lamented their neglect in discussions about Jammu and Kashmir’s development. “In Jammu and Kashmir, farmers are everywhere, yet our focus remains on factories, tourism, and religious facilities. The contribution of farmers and agriculture often goes unnoticed,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister stressed that agriculture could significantly transform J&K’s economy by reducing dependency on imports. “We import dairy products, meat, and oilseeds. If we focus on local production, we can not only meet our needs but also create surplus for export, positively impacting our economy,” he stated.

He called for making farming a viable and respected livelihood, particularly for younger generations who are increasingly distancing themselves from the sector. “Our farmers must feel that their hard work will pay off. Unfortunately, productive agricultural land is being used for non-agricultural purposes as the youth hesitate to connect with agriculture. This mindset needs to change,” he said.

Citing Jammu’s agricultural potential, he praised the region’s renowned RS Pura Basmati, Kishtwar Rajma, and Gucchi mushrooms while noting the growing cultivation of olives and exotic fruits. He also emphasised the importance of research, urging SKUAST to ensure its practical application reaches every corner of JK.

The Chief Minister pledged his government’s full support for SKUAST’s initiatives, including the summit and farmers’ fair, which he hailed as excellent platforms for knowledge-sharing and capacity-building.

During the event, Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development at SKUAST-Jammu, planted saplings of fruit trees, and inaugurated the Krishi Mela Rural Sports. The summit brought together scholars, scientists, students, and progressive farmers, creating a vibrant forum for advancing agricultural development in the region.
