Officials said a massive boulder and heavy debris slid down from a hillside in the early hours, completely blocking the road and halting vehicular movement along the strategic route linking Kishtwar with the rest of the region. Restoration work began promptly, with men and machinery deployed at first light to clear the obstruction.

After several hours of intensive efforts, authorities managed to reopen the stretch for one-way traffic at around 3:00 pm, providing partial relief to stranded commuters.

The 110-kilometre highway, regarded as a lifeline for the districts of Doda and Kishtwar, is prone to frequent landslides due to its fragile terrain, steep gradients and ongoing road-widening works. In recent years, construction activity has further contributed to slope instability and recurring disruptions.

Residents have repeatedly urged authorities to implement scientific stabilisation measures, including proper drainage, retaining walls and slope protection, to mitigate risks on the route.

Meanwhile, officials have advised motorists to exercise caution, warning that the affected area remains vulnerable to further slides as clearance operations continue.
