SRINAGAR: The ruling BJP’s major victory in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan is being seen as a major development. While most of the politicians skipped responding to the development, Omar Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad suggested the results would have an impact on the next general elections in 2024.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti predicted that the INDIA bloc would perform significantly better in 2024 elections.

“We are just there-and-a-half months away from the Lok Sabha elections. The results of these (Assembly) polls will have a bearing on the parliamentary elections,” Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters after the results were out on Sunday. He said the Congress had abandoned the minorities and taken the debate to the backward classes.

“I cannot say anything,” Omar Abdullah told reporters when asked about the election results. “The situation of the INDIA Alliance in the state elections, if the same continues in the future, then we will not be able to save ourselves.”

Omar said the Congress could not understand the ground situation in Madhya Pradesh. “What would have they lost if they had given 5-7 seats to Akhilesh Yadav… They have lost anyway. It is possible that if Akhilesh Yadav was given a few seats, we could save ourselves a little in MP. Now the results are out…”

However, Omar was very straightforward in admitting the fact. “We have to congratulate the BJP now because we were not expecting this. We were hearing that the Congress would easily win Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. They said that in Rajasthan too they will lead at the end. But after the results, all the claims proved to be baseless.”

Meanwhile, in response to the BJP’s resounding victories in three out of four states, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said that winning or losing elections is an integral part of a democratic system. She further emphasized that the Opposition alliance will strive to deliver a stronger performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

“Winning or losing an election is a part and parcel of democracy. The government in power has money, agencies at its disposal. The Election Commission, too, is working for them,” she added.
