SRINAGAR: After the Indian army returned civilians and even herds crossing the Line of Control inadvertently, the BSF has returned the body of a civilian who was killed at the International border by the paramilitary.

Reports appearing in the media said that BSF and Pak Rangers arranged a flag meeting on a border check post at Samba where a coffin was handed over to them. It was the body of Syed Raja Aasim, 27, a resident of Danga in Lahore, who had suffered multiple bullet injuries when the BSF opened fire when he sneaked into the Indian side near Ban Glad (Samba) on May 18. He was rushed to GMC Jammu where he was treated but he died of his grievous injuries.

Police said nothing objectionable was found from Aasim. He was the second person who was killed by the BSF on the IB in May. Earlier, one person lost his life on May 5, in almost the same situation.

Meanwhile, Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has said the ceasefire between Indian and Pakistani militaries is holding and has contributed to the sense of peace in border areas.

“This is the first step on the long road to normalisation of ties between the two countries. We would like the ceasefire to continue. It has definitely led to an improvement in the security situation and benefited civilians living in forward areas,” Naravane told The Hindustan Times.  “Counterterrorism operations will continue. We have no reason to believe that terror infrastructure along the LoC has been dismantled by the Pakistan army.” The border population is happy after the ceasefire. “The population living on either side suffers due to violence along the LoC. I am sure the Pakistan army is also concerned about the population and hopefully, the ceasefire will hold,” the army chief was quoted saying.
