SRINAGAR: Students and staff of Muslim Public School in Rajbagh saw their school go up in flames while celebrating Children’s Day. A fire broke out on the school’s top floor, reportedly caused by a short circuit.
Fortunately, the fire erupted while the students and teachers were outside in the school lawn, reducing the risk of casualties. A member of the school administration said, “A short circuit likely caused the fire. The auditorium, where the fire started, is mostly closed, and we were all outside celebrating. Some students were on the ground and first floors, but they were all safely evacuated.”
Fire and emergency services promptly responded to the distress call from the school and reached the spot on time, working to douse the flames. However, the top floor was severely affected, causing panic among students and parents.
Parents quickly rushed to the school to check on their children’s safety. The fire’s proximity to a residential area also created chaos in the surrounding area.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat, arrived at the site, spoke with those affected, and assessed the situation.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo also visited the school to evaluate the damage. She spoke to the media and the school administration. “Thankfully, everyone is safe, and there has been no loss of life, which is the most important thing,” she said. “I came here personally to ensure that everyone is safe. While Children’s Day functions are ongoing, we will properly assess the situation. The administration will look into the matter and ensure fire safety protocols are followed in all schools.”
