SRINAGAR: The Central Government has announced a temporary exemption on customs duty for cotton imports from June 1 to October 31 this year, a move aimed at ensuring adequate raw material availability for the textile sector and stabilising the domestic market.
In a notification, the Ministry of Textiles said the decision has been taken keeping the interests of cotton farmers and the entire cotton value chain in view.
The Ministry said the exemption, to be implemented during the cotton off-season, is expected to ensure sufficient cotton supply for the textile industry, support micro, small and medium enterprises, moderate input costs and enhance the global competitiveness of Indian textiles.
It added that the measure is intended to balance the interests of farmers while maintaining market stability and facilitating uninterrupted operations across the textile value chain.
Officials said the temporary waiver is expected to provide relief to domestic manufacturers by addressing supply concerns during the off-season and strengthening the sector’s overall resilience.
