SRINAGAR: As the annual Amarnath Yatra 2025 approaches, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has announced the deployment of around 30 trained personnel from its Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs) to ensure the safety and support of pilgrims undertaking the high-altitude pilgrimage. The Yatra is scheduled to begin on July 3.

The MRTs, comprising CRPF personnel with advanced training in mountain rescue operations, will be stationed along the Baltal axis, one of the two main routes leading to the cave shrine. “These teams will operate under the Srinagar Sector of CRPF, in coordination with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) of Jammu and Kashmir,” officials said.
DIG and Joint Nodal Officer Sudhir Kumar confirmed the deployment and highlighted the MRTs’ role in enhancing the security and support infrastructure for the Yatra.
“Their presence will assist those experiencing physical difficulties en route and enable rapid rescue operations in the event of flash floods, landslides, or other natural disasters,” DIG Sudhir Kumar said.
During the 2024 Yatra, the MRTs assisted over 13,000 pilgrims, providing timely relief in challenging conditions. Their performance has prompted further emphasis on the specialised selection and advanced training of CRPF personnel for this year’s deployment.
In preparation for possible emergencies, refresher training and mock drills are being regularly conducted in Baltal and adjoining high-altitude areas. These exercises simulate various emergency situations to ensure full operational readiness.
Officials noted that many MRT members have received specialised training in mountain rescue in collaboration with other paramilitary and disaster-response agencies, equipping them to navigate treacherous terrain and carry out high-risk extractions when required.
“The CRPF’s role is integral to India’s broader disaster response framework, particularly during high-footfall religious events like the Amarnath Yatra. Their deployment underscores the administration’s commitment to a safe and smooth pilgrimage experience for the lakhs of yatris expected this year,” DIG Sudhir Kumar added. (KNT)
