SRINAGAR: Authorities in the Tral sub-division of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district have imposed an immediate ban on bathing in Lam Nallah, a key source of drinking water for residents of Aripal tehsil, following reports of contamination and several recent cases of jaundice, particularly among children.
In an official communication issued by the Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Tral, the ban follows a letter from the Assistant Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Sub-Division Tral, and a representation from local residents, highlighting concerns over the deteriorating quality of the stream’s water.
Lam Nallah—used widely for drinking and domestic purposes—has become contaminated due to frequent bathing and related activities at the site. “Recent jaundice cases among children have been linked to this contamination. It is important to recall that a similar outbreak occurred last year due to the use of polluted water from the same source,” the communication stated,” reads an order.
To prevent further spread of waterborne diseases, the ADC’s office has directed the Tehsildar Aripal to install warning hoardings at the site, notifying the public of the water contamination and the ban on bathing. The SDPO Tral has also been asked to maintain strict vigil in the area to ensure compliance and prevent further misuse of the water source.
The communication further urges widespread dissemination of this advisory through social media and other platforms to ensure maximum public awareness.
Authorities have said that alternative sources for safe drinking water are being explored and appealed to the public to cooperate in protecting public health. (KNT)
