Alleging that the gross human rights violations continue unabated in Kashmir, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has stressed upon the International Community and World Human Rights organizations to play their role in investigating the thousands of enforced disappearance cases in Kashmir keeping in view the seriousness of the issue.
In a statement a spokesperson of the Hurriyat (M) quoting its chairman appealed UN Security Council to impartially investigate the case of enforced disappearances in Kashmir through International Court of justice.
Addressing a gathering at Jamia masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz said, “Indian troops have crossed all the limits by unleashing oppression and harassment on innocent Kashmiris. In the past 23 years, more than nine thousand people have been subjected to enforced disappearance and recently more than two thousand unmarked graves have been discovered dotting the Kashmiri landscape.”
He said that the discovery of unmarked graves have given impetus to the claims that whether the missing people might have been buried in those nameless graves.
Strongly regretting the silence of the International Community over this serious issue of enforced disappearance, Mirwaiz said, “It was a challenge for the world community and people who believe in human values including International Human Rights Organisations like Amnesty international and Asia Watch to fulfil its responsibilities towards humanity by investigating the gross rights violation committed by the India police and troops in Kashmir.”
The Hurriyat (M) chairman said that people were subjected to enforced disappearances after they were picked up from their houses, offices, parks or when they were walking on the road. He said claimants of democracy and Indian civil society have attained a criminal silence over this issue of grave nature.
Mirwaiz said as the world was observing the International Week for disappearance, the international community should play its role to press India to return the thousands of Kashmiris back to their relatives.
