SRINAGAR: The good news is that more people went home fully recovered than the ones who will be going to the hospital for treatment. The bad news is that Jammu lost double the number of citizens to Covid19 than Kashmir in the last 24 hours.

With the lockdown extended to May 31, already, the fast mutating Covid19 virus led to the loss of 51 citizens in the last 24 hours as fresh 3308 cases were detected across 20 districts of the erstwhile state.

Kashmir lost 17 citizens and Jammu 34 in the last 24 hours.

But what is rarely being seen as positive is that more people returned home from hospitals fully recovered than the new tally of infections on a daily basis. In the last 24 hours, as many as 4956 people recovered thus reducing the number of active cases to 47437. The recoveries included 1883 cases in Jammu and 3037 in Kashmir.

Now the death toll of Covid19 in Jammu and Kashmir is 3564 including 1883 in Kashmir and 1703 in Jammu.

As many as 22 deaths took place in Jammu city and six in Srinagar city, the information revealed by the government said.

The district-wise details suggest that Kashmir lost four citizens in Baramulla, three in Shopian, two in Budgam, and one each in Kulgam and Anantnag.

Apart from 22 deaths reported from Jammu city, the region lost three citizens each in Rajouri and Samba, two each in Udhampur and Reasi and one each in Poonch and Kathua.

In the last 24 hours, officials said 3308 Covid-19 positives were reported from across Jammu and Kashmir. Of them, Srinagar alone accounted for 512. Jammu, the other capital of the erstwhile state reported 447 cases.

Of the new cases detected in the last 24 hours, Kashmir accounts for 2187 cases against 1121 of the Jammu division.

In Kashmir, the new cases include 239 from Baramulla, 401 from Budgam, 160 from Pulwama, 265 from Kupwara, 150 from Anantnag, 111 from Bandipora, 127 from Ganderbal, 159 from Kulgam, and 63 from Shopian.

From Jammu, officials said Udhampur reported 77, Rajouri 96, Doda 75, Kathua 98, Samba 93, Kishtwar 29, Poonch 71, Ramban 71 and Reasi 61.

Right now, Jammu and Kashmir has 47437 active cases, which includes 28034 in Kashmir 19403 in Jammu. The reduced number of cases essentially means the health infrastructure is breathing ease as oxygen is getting low in demand within and outside the hospitals.
