Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was detained by police when he started his march towards besieged Jamia Masjid Srinagar on Friday.

The joint resistance leadership had asked people to march towards Jamia Masjid from Thursday evening to break the siege around it which has remained intact since July 09, 2016.

Mirwaiz was whisked away in a police jeep when he stepped out of his Nigeen residence today when he marched towards Jamia Masjid.

J&K Government has disallowed mandatory congregational Friday prayers since July 09, 2016, a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by forces in Bemdoora area of Islamabad district. Since then, Kashmir has remained shut during which at least 96 civilians were killed while as 15500 others were injured in forces action.

As the pro-freedom leadership called for march towards Jamia Masjid Srinagar which is situated at Nowhatta in Old Srinagar, government imposed curfew in six police stations in Srinagar  to disallow the scheduled march.

Ahead of the march, government put Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention while as JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was detained and lodged in central jail Srinagar on Thursday.

Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani, who is under house detention since 2010, was locked inside his Hyderpora residence today.
