SRINAGAR

Strict restrictions have been imposed in the sensitive parts of the Srinagar in view of the 10th Muharram processions while Kashmir is observing complete shutdonw on 96th straight day on Wednesday.
Heavy deployment of forces has been made on the roads. All the roads leading to Lal Chowk are sealed and army vehicles have been placed at every major point. Cops and CRPF men are not allowing anyone to enter in the city centre. However, those manage to pass through have to go through checking and frisking.
An official said that 10th Muharram processions on the traditional route will not be allowed as a “preventive measure”.
“But procession that are taken in other areas will be allowed,” the official said.
He further informed that restrictions will be imposed in “sensitive areas” to prevent any untoward incident.
During the Islamic month of Muharram, Shiites across the world mourn the death of the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussain (RA) in the Iraqi city of Karbala in the year 680.
The 8th and 10th Muharram processions remain banned in Srinagar due to “serious security and law and order problems” after the eruption of militancy in 1989. Before ban, 10th Muharram procession was taken out from Abi Guzar in Lal Chowk to Imam Bara Zadibal. However, the ban has been protested by the Shias, who accuse the government of religious infringement.
“Only small mourning rallies and processions will be allowed in selected areas with Shiite populations,” he added.
