SRINAGAR: In a bid to enhance accountability and streamline patient interactions in government-run health facilities, the Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department has made it mandatory for all doctors and paramedical staff to wear white aprons and display visible nameplates during duty hours.

The directive, issued through a formal circular signed by Secretary to the Government, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah (IAS), applies to all staff operating under the regular government health services, the National Health Mission (NHM), and Ayush departments.

The move comes in response to a surge in complaints from patients and their families who have reported difficulty identifying medical personnel in hospitals and primary health centres. Officials say the lack of adherence to the existing dress code has affected both the patient experience and institutional accountability.

“All doctors and paramedical staff are required to wear proper white aprons and legible nameplates displaying their full name and designation,” the circular states, adding that such identification is essential for facilitating better communication between patients and healthcare providers.

Heads of institutions, including Medical Superintendents and Chief Medical Officers, have been tasked with ensuring strict enforcement of the directive across all government healthcare establishments in the Union Territory.

Departmental officials believe the new enforcement will improve the visibility and recognisability of staff, help patients navigate healthcare facilities more easily, and reinforce a sense of professional responsibility among medical personnel.
