Dy CM Urges Centre for Special State-Like Package for Jammu Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Monday urged the Centre to announce a special, state-equivalent financial package for Jammu and Kashmir in the upcoming Union Budget, saying the Union Territory’s development requirements are significantly higher than those of an ordinary UT.

Speaking to the media outside the Assembly complex, Choudhary said that although Jammu and Kashmir continues to function as a Union Territory, its challenges and responsibilities are similar to those of a full-fledged state, warranting enhanced budgetary support.

He said the past decade has seen a sharp increase in unemployment, while recurring floods and prolonged disruptions have inflicted serious damage on the economy, particularly the tourism sector. He maintained that a robust financial package was necessary to address these setbacks.

Responding to queries about Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Deputy Chief Minister said such interactions are confidential and governed by official protocol.

Choudhary also recalled the BJP’s promise during the 2024 elections to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the assurance must be fulfilled. He added that the demand was not confined to his party, but stemmed from commitments made by the BJP itself.

He said the Centre’s intent would become clear once the Union Budget is unveiled.

Commenting on Pakistan, Choudhary said the country lacks a credible development roadmap and should not be taken seriously, adding that decisions regarding participation in international cricket tournaments are not a matter of concern for India.
