SRINAGAR: Ghulam Jeelani Pandit, former Director General of Police (DGP) Jammu and Kashmir, died on Monday, officials confirmed.
Pandit, who retired as the fourth DGP of the erstwhile state, was widely respected for his professionalism and long service in law enforcement. The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police expressed deep grief over his demise, with the DGP and all ranks paying rich tributes and recalling his dedication and contributions to the force. “His integrity, commitment and leadership will always be remembered,” the police said in a statement.
Condolences poured in from political leaders, colleagues and civil society, who remembered Pandit as a distinguished officer who upheld discipline during some of the region’s most challenging times.
The police extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, noting that his legacy of service would endure.
Born on February 22, 1933, in Srinagar Pandit’s life was a testament to unwavering public service, his colleagues say.
Pandit joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police Service early in his career, rising through the ranks with a reputation for integrity and operational acumen. He assumed the pivotal role of DGP—the fourth individual to hold this position in the force’s history—on May 21, 1987.
Pandit is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. His funeral prayers were held at Jamalatta in downtown Srinagar.
