Governor NN Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), called for devising differential scholarships to attract talented students to the University with a view to promote excellence in academics and research. He was chairing the 24th meeting of the Executive Council of the University at Kakryal, Katra, on Monday.
The Council held an extensive discussion on the proposed Perspective Plan(2015-25) of SMVDU and the Chancellor desired that the Plan should be suitably re-oriented, keeping in view the original mandate of University, to offer scientific and technical education of the highest standards. He stressed that the University should continue to focus on the core technical areas which have potential for excellence in the Education, Scholarship and Research areas.
The Council took a number of important decisions for developing the University as a Centre of Excellence in academics, research and co-curricular activities; approved adoption of Choice Based Credit System in the university; constitution of “School Research Committee” in all Academic Schools for conduct of all matters pertaining to research including the Ph.D program; constitution of Doctoral Student Research Committee (DSRC); establishment of Hindi Karyalay Nideshalay; enhancement of seats in MSc.(Physics) from 30 to 45 and M. Sc. (Mathematics) from 30 to 60 from Academic Session(2016-17) onwards. With a view to assisting the students in preparation for GATE examination, the Council approved the proposal to start GATE preparatory classes for B.Tech., B.Arch. and M.Sc. students. The Governor stressed expediting establishment of a Human Resource Development Centre at SMVDU. The Council allowed adoption of Lateral Entry in the B.Tech. Programs in 2nd year, as per the guidelines and eligibility criteria of AICTE.
To augment the existing infrastructure of the SMVDU to meet the increased demand, the Council approved construction of a 400 bed capacity Girls Hostel and a new block of 16 residential quarters for faculty and other staff. A proposal to augment water supply in the campus was also approved.
Earlier, Prof Sudhir K Jain, Vice Chancellor of the University, in his power point presentation, gave details of the academic and extra-curricular achievements of the University in the past 6 months since the last meeting of the Executive Council. He also dwelt on the efforts being made to improve the existing infrastructure and the initiatives being taken in the fields of teaching and research.
