In a major reprieve to students and parents across the Valley who are forced to buy new books and uniform sets by private schools, the government has directed all the deputy commissioners to form squads to check the arbitrary whim of the school authorities.
The schools resorting to such unlawful methods will be deregistered by the government.
Following complaints by people that private schools in the region are overcharging on purchase of text books and are also rejecting old books for students, Director School Education Kashmir, Shah Faesal has written to all the Deputy Commissioners to form checking squads for the complaints.
As per order No. 002-004/3015, the director has said that it has received frequent complaints that private schools are overcharging on text books and note books are being printed and sold from captive books shops or from kiosks within the school so as to force parents to buy these materials on exorbitant rates.
“It has also been alleged that some schools are not allowing text books of one sibling to be reused by another and are insisting on purchase of fresh book sets just to mint money,” the director said. “Also the school children are being forced to buy multiple sets of uniform without any rationale.”
The director said that such practice are in conflict with the law and need to be stooped immediately.
“So, constitute monitoring squads of revenue and education officers and provide them with necessary magisterial assistance to carry out inspection of schools in your jurisdiction,” the order says, adding that all such material should be seized.
“Such schools will face deregistration and disaffiliation,” Faesal said. (KNS)
