The wreath-laying event of the three paramilitary men who were killed a day before in at Wanigam in Handwara militant attack was held in Humhama Budgam on Tuesday.

The event was held at Special Training Camp in Humhama area of Budgam. Besides Advisor to Lieutenant Governor Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar,, several top police and CRPF officers were present on the occasion.

On May 5, 2020, late evening, three paramilitary troopers were killed after militants attacked a joint party of police and CRPF at Wanigam in Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The CRPF men lost their lives in the attack were identified as Ashwani Kumar Yadav, C Chandrasekar and Santosh Kumar Mishra.

According to reports, the fire exchange continued for around five minutes. After the firing stopped, another body was spotted around a half kilometre from the shootout site. He was identified as a 14-year-old boy Omar Shafi Bhat, a class seventh student. A resident of Khipora village, Omar who was also known as Hazim was physically handicapped.

Giving details about the incident, a police spokesman said that at about 1730hrs on Monday militants fired indiscriminately upon a joint party of Police and CRPF deployed at Wangam Crossing in Kralgund area of Handwara to enforce strict lockdown in view of Covid-19 pandemic.

He in a statement said that the fire was retaliated, however, during the ensuing firefight three CRPF personnel of 92BN sustained grievous gunshot injuries who later on succumbed to their injuries.

“During cross-firing, one civilian also got killed. Taking advantage of dense foliage of nearby orchards the militants managed to escape from the spot. Search has been launched in the area to nab the militants,” he said.

“Police has registered a case and officers are investigating the circumstances of this crime,” said the spokesman.
