Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura Saturday laid foundation of girls hostel at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (FVSc&AH) of SKUAST-K at Shuhama, Alusteng in Ganderbal.
Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir Prof Nazeer Ahmed, Dean, FVSc&AH Shuhama Prof Sarfaraz Ahmad Wani and other senior officers of the University were present on the occasion.
The hostel facility to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5.30 crore would accommodate around 100 students after its completion.
The Minister also visited different divisions of the Faculty and interacted with the scientists.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister stressed the need for taking scientific research from laboratory to the field, besides emphasizing on making university education more research-oriented. It is the priority of the government headed by Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti to provide quality education to the students at their doorstep, he added.
The Minister urged the scientists to work towards solving the problems being faced by the farmers and bring innovations for the betterment of agriculture sector.
VC, SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof Nazeer Ahmed, in his address, highlighted various research achievements of the University, particularly related to to FVSc&AH, Shuhama. He specially mentioned about development of foot rot vaccine which is now being promoted for commercial purposes.
He also highlighted various issues for consideration by the government including allotment of land to the University for establishing KVKs at Budgam, Shopian, Kupwara and Bandipora, besides land at Yarikhah Potato Farm Tangmarg for establishment of Potato Seed Multiplication Farm by the University.
