Heatwave Alert Issued for Jammu Kashmir as Temperatures Set to Rise Further

   

SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a spell of hot and dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir from May 22 to 31, warning of a possible rise in maximum temperatures and isolated heatwave conditions in parts of the Union Territory.

According to the official forecast, the region is expected to remain largely dry and warm between May 22 and 26, with only brief spells of light rain possible at isolated locations, mainly during late afternoons. From May 27 to 31, the weather is likely to continue hot and dry, although scattered to widespread light rain or thundershowers may occur.

The advisory highlights a rise in maximum temperatures by 1–2°C in the Kashmir Division till May 23, with heatwave conditions anticipated at isolated places. A subsequent drop of 2–3°C is expected. In the Jammu Division, temperatures may rise by 2–3°C until May 26, also triggering heatwave conditions in isolated areas.

The MET Centre also cautioned about the possibility of thunderstorms or gusty winds during late afternoons at some locations, which may impact outdoor activities and travel.

Residents, particularly the elderly, children, and those with health conditions, are advised to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours. Authorities have been urged to remain alert for any weather-related disruptions. Amid the heatwave, the school timings have been changed.
