National Conference on Wednesday said there was no need to enact a political drama over issuance of passport to Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani and said if the Separatist Leader wants to avail the Indian Passport to travel to meeting his ailing daughter, he should be allowed to do so.

A National Conference spokesperson said that the then Chief Minister and NC Working President Omar Abdullah along with former Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram had cleared Syed Ali Geelani’s passport in 2011, which he had then chosen not to avail.

“Fact of the matter is that under the same system and through the same institutions of the State, Geelani Sahib was offered a passport in 2011. If Geelani Sahib could be cleared for a passport in 2011, there is no logic or reason to suggest that he is not illegible for a passport today,” NC spokesperson said.

“The Separatist leader should be allowed to visit his ailing daughter in Saudi Arabia and the alliance partners, BJP and PDP in should look for bigger ‘issues’ to enact their fixed-matches over,” the statement said adding, “Back in 2011, the passport was offered to Geelani Sahib without enacting any drama. There needs to be no drama today either. Rather than issuing self-contradictory statements in newspapers, the PDP-BJP Govt should issue a passport to Geelani Sahib under the due procedures of law and allow him to travel to meet his daughter.”
