SRINAGAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal rainfall and below-normal temperatures for Jammu and Kashmir in May, pointing to a cooler and wetter-than-usual start to the summer season.
According to the latest outlook, most parts of the Union Territory, including the Kashmir Valley, are likely to experience higher-than-average rainfall, with frequent spells of precipitation and persistent cloud cover expected throughout the month.
Maximum temperatures are projected to remain below seasonal norms, indicating relatively mild daytime conditions compared to typical May weather patterns.
The IMD said the forecast represents a clear departure from the region’s usual early summer trend, which is generally marked by rising temperatures and dry conditions. It added that the outlook is based on probabilistic seasonal models and may vary at the local level.
Meanwhile, the weather agency has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. It further stated that Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are likely to experience hot and humid weather conditions today.
