IMD Predicts Rain In Jammu and Kashmir Till July 10, Warns Of Flash Floods, Landslides

   

SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has predicted wet weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir over the next five days, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds and the possibility of flash floods and landslides at vulnerable locations.

According to the five-day forecast issued on Monday, several parts of the Union Territory are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall from July 6 to July 10, with intense showers likely at isolated places, particularly over the Jammu division.

The weather department has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places during the next five days. It said heavy rain spells may trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas between July 6 and July 10.

As per the warning map issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Jammu division districts including Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch are likely to remain under higher alert levels during July 6-8 due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. Parts of Kashmir are expected to receive light to moderate showers during the period.

The department has advised people to avoid venturing close to water bodies, landslide-prone slopes and flood-prone areas during intense rainfall activity.

Meanwhile, temperatures remained above normal at several places in Kashmir. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius, around 3.7 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 20.8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 28.9 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg 25.4 degrees Celsius.

In Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.4 degrees Celsius, while Kathua recorded 36.4 degrees Celsius. Rainfall was recorded at several stations, including 66.2 mm in Kathua, 44.4 mm in Katra, 41.8 mm in Jammu and 33.6 mm in Bhaderwah.

The weather office said conditions are likely to improve gradually after July 10, though isolated spells of rain and thunderstorms may continue.
