In India, 54449 Minority Run Educational Institutions Have A Cumulative Enrolment of 9769902 Students

   

SRINAGAR: The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir has 149 minority-managed schools, with a total enrolment of 10,170 students. Among these, 3,380 students belong to minority communities, while 6,790 are from non-minority communities. The higher education sector in Jammu and Kashmir shows a total of 13 minority-managed HEIs, where 1,960 students come from minority backgrounds, and 1,927 are from non-minority groups, making the overall enrolment 3,887.

The data is part of a report Status of Minority Educational Institutions that the government placed in the parliament recently. It offers detailed state and union territory-wise data on schools and higher education institutions (HEIs) managed by minority communities in India.

The status report suggests that India is home to 51,627 minority-managed schools with an enrolment of 73,06,031 students, including 23,08,288 from minority communities and 49,97,743 from non-minority groups. In the higher education sector, there are 2,822 minority-managed higher education institutions, enrolling a total of 24,63,871 students. Of these, 6,31,626 students belong to minority communities, while 18,32,245 students are from non-minority backgrounds.

These figures underscore the significant contribution of minority institutions in providing education to both minority and non-minority students across the country.

In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, there are 18 minority-managed schools. The total enrolment stands at 5,814, with 2,603 minority students and 3,211 non-minority students. Andhra Pradesh, on the other hand, has 793 such schools, with 13,161 students from minority communities and a significantly higher number of 1,67,220 students from non-minority backgrounds. The combined enrolment in these institutions is 1,80,381. Moving to the higher education sector in the state, Andhra Pradesh has 44 minority-managed HEIs, enrolling 3,107 minority students and 27,598 non-minority students, bringing the total enrolment to 30,705.

In Arunachal Pradesh, 92 minority-managed schools accommodate a total of 24,046 students, of which 17,625 are from minority communities and 6,421 are non-minority students. The higher education scenario in Arunachal Pradesh shows four minority-managed HEIs with a combined enrolment of 2,738, comprising 1,424 students from minority backgrounds and 1,314 from non-minority groups. Assam has 266 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 1,60,840 students, including 41,519 from minority groups and 1,19,321 from non-minority communities. In the higher education space, Assam hosts 16 minority-managed HEIs with a total enrolment of 17,039, where 2,503 students are from minority communities, while 14,536 are non-minority students.

Bihar accounts for 1,482 minority-managed schools, which have a total enrolment of 1,74,706 students. Out of this, 20,561 students belong to minority communities, whereas 1,54,145 are from non-minority groups. Bihar also has 48 minority-managed higher education institutions, with 67,376 students in total, comprising 19,200 minority students and 48,176 non-minority students. In Chandigarh, there are 27 minority-managed schools with an enrolment of 24,255 students, of whom 5,066 are minority students and 19,189 are non-minority. Chandigarh also has one higher education institution managed by minority groups, enrolling a total of 138 students, with 20 belonging to minority communities and 118 from non-minority backgrounds.

Chhattisgarh features 589 minority-managed schools, with a total enrolment of 1,71,008, consisting of 27,388 minority students and 1,43,620 non-minority students. The higher education sector in Chhattisgarh includes 16 minority-managed HEIs, accommodating 15,340 students overall, with 1,674 from minority groups and 13,666 from non-minority communities. In Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, there are 12 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 7,525, comprising 822 minority students and 6,703 non-minority students. The region does not have any reported minority-managed higher education institutions.

Delhi has 236 minority-managed schools where 1,24,327 students are enrolled, including 29,873 from minority communities and 94,454 from non-minority backgrounds. The capital also has 20 minority-managed HEIs, which accommodate 57,904 students in total, with 23,209 minority students and 34,695 non-minority students. In Goa, 239 minority-managed schools have a balanced enrolment of 1,14,898 students, with 57,195 belonging to minority groups and 57,703 being non-minority students. The higher education space in Goa includes 11 minority-managed HEIs with a total of 9,410 students, comprising 5,628 from minority communities and 3,782 from non-minority groups.

Gujarat has 1,270 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 2,19,681, including 46,205 minority students and 1,73,476 non-minority students. The state also has 52 minority-managed HEIs, which collectively enrol 29,265 students, of whom 3,182 are minority students and 26,083 are from non-minority backgrounds. In Haryana, there are 177 minority-managed schools where 71,727 students are enrolled, including 5,384 minority students and 66,343 non-minority students. Haryana further features 42 minority-managed HEIs, with a total enrolment of 24,479, comprising 4,768 minority students and 19,711 non-minority students.

Himachal Pradesh has 35 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 27,537 students, of whom 1,380 belong to minority communities and 26,157 to non-minority groups. In higher education, the state has two minority-managed HEIs, with 2,436 students in total, including 484 minority students and 1,952 non-minority students.

Kerala stands out with 3,963 minority-managed schools, enrolling a total of 13,30,797 students, with 6,87,730 from minority communities and 6,43,067 from non-minority groups. In the higher education sector, Kerala has 450 minority-managed HEIs, which collectively enrol 3,26,442 students, including 1,31,687 minority students and 1,94,755 non-minority students. Similarly, Karnataka has 3,364 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 6,73,997, comprising 2,08,131 minority students and 4,65,866 non-minority students. The state has 367 minority-managed higher education institutions with a total of 2,02,393 students, where 61,028 are minority students and 1,41,365 are from non-minority groups.

In Ladakh, there are 29 minority-managed schools, but the enrolment data for both minority and non-minority students is not available. The region does not have any minority-managed HEIs. Similarly, Lakshadweep and Mizoram report no minority-managed schools or higher education institutions.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU, Aligarh

Manipur has 239 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 94,587 students. Out of these, 65,802 belong to minority communities, while 28,785 are non-minority students. The state also has six minority-managed HEIs, enrolling a total of 4,054 students, with 71 from minority groups and 3,983 from non-minority backgrounds.

Meghalaya features 1,151 minority-managed schools that collectively enrol 1,52,169 students. Of this total, 1,30,078 students belong to minority communities, and 22,091 are from non-minority groups. The state also has 11 minority-managed HEIs, enrolling 12,300 students, including 9,212 from minority communities and 3,088 non-minority students.

Nagaland has 152 minority-managed schools with a total enrolment of 77,950 students, comprising 68,902 minority students and 9,048 non-minority students. In higher education, Nagaland reports 11 minority-managed HEIs with 3,961 students enrolled, including 1,253 minority students and 2,708 from non-minority communities.

In Odisha, 513 minority-managed schools are enrolling 1,25,225 students. Among them, 32,974 belong to minority communities, while 92,251 are non-minority students. Odisha has nine minority-managed higher education institutions with a total enrolment of 2,497, including 297 minority students and 2,200 from non-minority backgrounds.

Puducherry has 50 minority-managed schools that collectively enrol 49,930 students, with 7,481 belonging to minority communities and 42,449 to non-minority groups. The union territory also has 14 minority-managed HEIs, accommodating a total of 12,159 students, of whom 713 are from minority groups and 11,446 are from non-minority backgrounds.

In Punjab, 173 minority-managed schools serve a total of 1,84,504 students. Of this number, 92,205 belong to minority communities, while 92,299 are non-minority students. Punjab also has 52 minority-managed higher education institutions, enrolling 40,982 students, including 9,290 from minority groups and 31,692 from non-minority backgrounds.

Rajasthan has 2,269 minority-managed schools, with a total enrolment of 1,66,611 students. Out of this, 23,980 students are from minority communities, while 1,42,631 are from non-minority groups. The state also has 49 minority-managed HEIs, where 37,468 students are enrolled, comprising 3,947 minority students and 33,521 non-minority students.

In Sikkim, there are 32 minority-managed schools enrolling 10,185 students, including 4,183 minority students and 6,002 non-minority students. Sikkim also reports two minority-managed HEIs, with 207 students enrolled, including 102 from minority communities and 105 from non-minority groups.

Tamil Nadu has 5,292 minority-managed schools, with a total enrolment of 71,370 students. Among these, 14,814 belong to minority communities, while 56,556 are non-minority students. Tamil Nadu also has a significant presence of minority-managed higher education institutions, with 380 HEIs enrolling 5,00,025 students. Of these, 1,17,526 students are from minority communities, while 3,82,499 are non-minority students.

In Telangana, 748 minority-managed schools enrol a total of 1,17,009 students, with 31,095 belonging to minority communities and 85,914 to non-minority groups. Telangana also has 94 minority-managed HEIs, where 68,445 students are enrolled, including 30,602 from minority backgrounds and 37,843 from non-minority groups.

Tripura has 214 minority-managed schools enrolling 50,426 students, of which 16,860 belong to minority communities and 33,566 are from non-minority groups. The state has only one minority-managed higher education institution, with a total enrolment of 1,462 students, including 212 minority students and 1,250 non-minority students.

Jamia Millia Islamia

In Uttar Pradesh, 13,708 minority-managed schools have a combined enrolment of 5,70,844 students. Out of these, 1,05,982 students are from minority communities, while 4,64,862 are non-minority students. The state also features 195 minority-managed HEIs, enrolling a total of 1,92,308 students, with 51,477 minority students and 1,40,831 from non-minority backgrounds.

Uttarakhand has 685 minority-managed schools enrolling 90,957 students, with 10,228 from minority communities and 80,729 from non-minority backgrounds. The state also has 13 minority-managed higher education institutions, with a total of 7,040 students enrolled, including 750 minority students and 6,290 non-minority students.

Finally, West Bengal has 1,778 minority-managed schools, where the total enrolment is 2,21,738 students. Out of these, 48,601 students belong to minority communities, while 1,73,137 are from non-minority groups. In the higher education sector, West Bengal has 45 minority-managed HEIs, enrolling a total of 73,437 students. Among them, 12,975 are from minority backgrounds and 60,462 are non-minority students.

With these additions, the comprehensive state and union territory-wise data further highlights the substantial role of minority communities in providing education while also accommodating a large number of non-minority students.
