SRINAGAR: In a stunning turn of events, former Jammu and Kashmir lawmaker Engineer Rashid, currently incarcerated on UAPA charges, has declared his intention to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla constituency.

Abdul Rashid Sheikh, 56, is a prominent leader of the Awami Ittehad Party. Despite being detained, the party’s Political Affairs Committee has unanimously decided to nominate Rashid for the parliamentary seat.

Firdous Baba, the spokesperson for the Awami Ittehad Party, defended the decision, citing constitutional provisions that allow an accused individual, not yet convicted, to participate in electoral processes. He expressed hope for Rashid’s release before the elections but emphasised their readiness to proceed with his candidacy even if he remains incarcerated.

Rashid’s political journey has been marked by controversy and activism. He first rose to prominence after winning the Langate seat in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2008, representing the Handwara area of Kupwara district. Despite facing opposition and legal challenges, Rashid secured re-election in 2014, further solidifying his position as a formidable political figure in the region.

Rashid had contested Lok Sabha polls in 2019 as well and finished the second runner up.
