SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) senior leader and former minister Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu Kashmir.
Chowdhury Mohammed Ramzan was in a direct contest with Ali Mohammed Mir of the BJP in one of the seats.
Ramzan has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu Kashmir, winning by 58 votes.
Ramzan’s victory marks the first declared result in the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections, which witnessed voting by 85 MLAs earlier in the day. Backed by the National Conference-led alliance, Ramzan secured a decisive mandate amid the party’s strong numerical advantage in the Legislative Assembly.
The NC’s strength in the House ensured a smooth win for Ramzan, with two other party candidates also expected to sail through comfortably, while the BJP is likely to secure one seat.
Going by numbers, the 41-member strong NC, which has the backing of the six Congress, three PDP and one CPM MLAs, and six Independents, is likely to sail through in three seats.
The Assembly has a strength of 88 MLAs out of which the NC-led ruling coalition plus PDP has 57.
The counting for the remaining seats is currently underway, and official announcements are expected shortly.
