SRINAGAR: Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi Al-Najfi, a senior Shia cleric and scholar, passed away in the early hours of Friday, at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar. He was 85.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the demise in a condolence message. “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Deeply saddened by the passing of distinguished Shia scholar, cleric, and religious leader Allama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi. His profound contributions to religious thought, social harmony, and public service in J&K leave behind a legacy that will be remembered with deep respect and affection. Heartfelt condolences to his family, followers mourning this great loss.”

President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, also expressed sorrow. In her statement, she described Allama Baqir as “not just a scholar but a beacon of knowledge, piety, and moral guidance.” She said his demise marks the end of an era of religious scholarship, spiritual leadership, and community service in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sajad Lone, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, extended his condolences: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi Al-Najfi of Budgam. A revered scholar and guide. May Allah SWT elevate his ranks and grant him Jannat al-Firdous (Ameen).”
Allama Moosavi was regarded as a pillar of wisdom and guidance for many in the Shia community and beyond. His teachings and efforts to uphold unity and peace will be remembered.
Large numbers of people are expected to attend his funeral and pay their final respects.
Born on March 21 1940, Allama Aga Baqir commenced his early education at Babul Ilm in Budgam before proceeding to the renowned Howza Ilmia seminary in Najaf Ashraf. Returning to Kashmir in 1982, he carried forward the spiritual mission of the Aga family, following in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors, including Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi.
A polyglot fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Kashmiri, he was also a prolific author, poet, and preacher. His works earned him the prestigious Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, underscoring his intellectual contribution to Islamic scholarship.
