The launch event, attended by senior officials, football veterans, athletes, coaches and sports enthusiasts, marked a renewed emphasis on structured sports development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Satish Sharma extended his congratulations to the Department of Youth Services and Sports, the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council, and other stakeholders for their dedicated efforts in promoting sports and expanding infrastructure across the Union Territory. He described the League as a “significant milestone” in reviving Kashmir’s sporting legacy.
“Kashmir has always been home to unique sporting talent. It is heartening to see initiatives like the Kashmir Super League reviving and celebrating that culture in a structured and professional manner,” Sharma said.
The Minister underscored the transformative power of sports in society, particularly as a tool against social evils like drug abuse. “Youth today face many challenges. Sports not only build physical fitness but also develop discipline, teamwork and strong character. It is our frontline defence in the battle against substance abuse,” he added.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Omar Abdullah-led Government to youth empowerment, Sharma said that the administration is focusing on upgrading sports infrastructure, expanding access in rural and border areas, and launching sustainable platforms for grassroots talent. The Kashmir Super League, with six competing teams, is expected to provide such a platform for showcasing and nurturing local talent.
“We are committed to building a sports ecosystem that nurtures talent, promotes inclusion, and gives our youth the opportunity to shine both nationally and internationally,” Sharma said.
Commissioner Secretary of Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafiz, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of organising leagues that provide exposure and experience to young footballers. He said that platforms like the Kashmir Super League are critical in talent development and in broadening the competitive landscape of sports in the Union Territory.
Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul, provided an overview of the various initiatives being undertaken by the council and shared insights into the structure and objectives of the newly launched league. She noted that football has witnessed growing popularity in Kashmir, and such tournaments play a crucial role in sustaining that momentum.
Chief Sports Officer Annisa Nabi, alongside other senior officials, coaches and football legends, also attended the ceremony, lending it both gravitas and enthusiastic energy.
The event saw strong participation from football lovers, youth clubs and athletes, reflecting the widespread public interest in the sport. With matches set to begin soon, the Kashmir Super League 2025 promises to be a celebration of local talent, unity and the spirit of sportsmanship.
