Curfew continued for the third day in the Kashmir Valley on Monday in the wake of the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Additional forces have been called in to help maintain law and order in the state. The whole valley is under strict curfew since Saturday when Afzal Guru was hanged. Apart from Srinagar city, in every district and Tehsil headquarter, police and Para military troopers deployed in every nook and corner are keeping a close vigil and the people are forced to remain indoors.

On Sunday, nine people were injured, two of them critically, in clashes between protestors and forces, while one person was drowned in another incident. The people allege that the deceased was being chased by police.

Five people were injured in a violent clash between the forces and protestors in Watergam (Rafiabad) village of Baramulla district.

Doctors in Baramulla hospital referred two of the critically injured people for specialised treatment to Srinagar. Doctors at Baramulla hospital said the condition of one of the two referred people was “very critical”.

Residents in Watergam village said the forces had fired at protestors.

Protestors also defied curfew restrictions in Khanpora locality of Baramulla town, Palhalan village on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway and some other places.

Police used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters in Pulwama town on Sunday evening. The clashes lasted for several hours there.

The authorities did not allow any relaxation in the curfew during Sunday, the second day as the Valley remained tense.
