The term of one man Retired Justice Gandhi Commission probing Kishtwar communal violence expired on October 22 (Tuesday). Sources in Home Department told CNS that the commission did not submit its report yet.
On August 23 this year, the government had appointed Justice Gandhi, retired judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, as one man commission of inquiry to probe Kishtwar violence and had asked to submit a report within a period of one month. However, even after the expiry of deadline, the Commission could not submit the report.
Principal Secretary Home, Suresh Kumar told CNS that it is too early for the Commission to submit its report.
“It was only a few days ago that Mr Gandhi visited Kishtwar and how can he prepare his report within few days. It will take some more time,” Kumar said.
One of officials of the Home Department said that he does not know anything about the report as all the officials are busy with the Union Home Minister.
When contacted, retired Justice R.C.Gandhi told CNS that he can not comment on the issue. “Let you talk to my Secretary, he would provide you information,” Gandhi said.
Pertinently, communal clashes broke out in Kishtwar town in Jammu region on August 9, on the day of Eid, leaving three persons dead and dozens others injured. Property worth crores was set ablaze by the rival communities, forcing the government to impose curfew and seek assistance of the army in controlling the riots.
The curfew was lifted after 12 days following the visit of an all party delegation and senior ministers of the state government that led to reconciliation between the two communities.
