SRINAGAR: The National Conference and Congress have settled a power-sharing agreement in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil, with Dr Mohd Jaffar Akhoon of the former set to become the council head for the initial two-and-a-half years.

In a joint news conference held in Kargil, leaders from the NC and Congress revealed that the position of chief executive councillor would alternate between the two parties.

Nasir Munshi, the Congress spokesperson, confirmed that both parties would have an equal stake in the council.

He stated that the CEC would be from the National Conference for the first two-and-a-half years, followed by the Congress for the remaining term.

“Two executive councilors would represent each party in the council to ensure equal representation,” he added. Additionally, one of the executive councillor positions designated for principal religious minorities would be from the NC during the initial term.

The Congress spokesperson emphasised that the departments assigned to the chairman and executive councillors would be equally divided between the two parties.

He affirmed the commitment of Congress and NC to establishing an effective and sustainable council focused on the betterment, development, and welfare of the Kargil population.

Munshi further revealed that after the executive council’s formation, a common minimum program (CMP) would be drafted and formulated. “The CMP, developed in consultation with the party’s high command, will outline shared goals, priorities, and policies of the coalition for the benefit of Kargil,” he explained.

Senior NC leader Qamar Ali Akhoon announced that Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhoon, councillor of Thasgam Thuvina constituency, would be the NC’s candidate for the post of CEC during the initial term.

Dr. Jaffar, a former chief medical officer, is the brother of Qamar Ali Akhoon.

The election for the post of CEC is scheduled for tomorrow. (KNO)
