SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq on Monday said a proposed bill seeking restoration of provisions of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Act, 1960, would provide relief to people who have legally acquired land on lease.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly here, Sadiq said the 1960 Act was amended in 2022 without involvement of the legislature, which his party believes was “not appropriate”.
“The bill being taken up today is aimed at addressing the concerns of those who have legally acquired land on lease, including for schools, shops, houses and hotels,” he said.
He expressed hope that the government would take the proposal seriously and adopt it, saying it would benefit a large number of people across sectors.
Sadiq clarified that the bill is meant for legal leaseholders and not for those who have encroached on state or private land.
“We are against encroachment. This bill is only for those who have acquired land legally,” he said.
He also referred to a recent court observation asking the government to engage with affected stakeholders, and said the bill assumes significance in that context.
“If a law has to be framed, it should be done in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. This bill provides such an opportunity,” he added.
On proposed bills related to prohibition, Sadiq said discussions would take place once the details are available.
“In principle, no one supports the spread of drugs or alcohol abuse. But we will take a position after examining the bill,” he said, adding that the government’s response on the issue would be important, given the revenue implications. (KNS)
