SRINAGAR: Leh district authorities have imposed a complete ban on the storage, sale, display, distribution and supply of mouth freshener products containing tobacco or similar substances, with immediate effect, an official said on Monday.
The order was issued by Leh District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing concerns over the growing availability of such products to school-going children, particularly through retail outlets located near educational institutions.
According to the directive, tobacco-containing mouth fresheners marketed under brand names such as “Cool Lip” and similar products have seen increased consumption among minors, raising serious concerns about their impact on oral and overall health.
The administration said the preventive measure was necessary in the larger interest of public health and to safeguard children from the harmful effects of tobacco-related substances.
The ban will remain in force until further orders, the official added. Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will invite action under the relevant provisions of law.
