SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the implementation of three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023—in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Lieutenant Governor reviewed the comprehensive measures taken for the capacity building and training of police personnel and officials from other departments for the effective implementation of the new criminal laws that came into force on July 1 2024, reads a DIPR statement.
He emphasised the need for dedicated efforts to strengthen the Criminal Justice System and increase the rate of conviction, especially in heinous crimes, anti-national activities, and terror-related incidents.
“We must ensure transparency in the actions taken by the police and meet the timelines set for speedy investigations and trials, as outlined in the new criminal laws,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Lieutenant Governor further directed a comparative study of the pre- and post-implementation periods of the new criminal laws and the preparation of a calendar for Public Awareness Camps in collaboration with various departments, including Information, Education, Social Welfare, and the Legal Services Authority, to increase public awareness regarding the new criminal laws.
The meeting also discussed the progress made in various technological interventions, the notification of SoPs and guidelines, the translation of new laws into Dogri and Kashmiri languages, the procurement of FSL vans, and the training of forensic experts, prison personnel, and judicial officers.
