SRINAGAR: Authorities on Monday issued a comprehensive ban on the use of motorcycles by students below 18 years of age in Central and North Kashmir during school hours.
The Joint Director for the School Education Department in Central and North Kashmir communicated this decision to the Chief Education Officers of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora.
The officer stated, “Numerous complaints have been circulating in the media and social circles regarding reckless driving, stunt biking, and the dangerous use of two-wheelers by students attending government and private schools.”
“These students engage in such activities without any objection or control from the school authorities, leading to injuries, minor accidents, and even loss of life. These incidents can be avoided through proper counseling, advice, and the implementation of a blanket ban in and around school premises,” the statement further mentioned.
Consequently, the Joint Director directly instructed the Chief Education Officers of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora to raise awareness among all the school authorities in government and private schools, prohibiting any student under the age of 18 from using motorcycles or scooters during school hours.
The officer also informed the CEOs, “Students must not be allowed to use motorcycles or scooters without wearing helmets and possessing driving licenses issued by the appropriate authority.”
Additionally, it stated that the relevant Zonal Education Officers should conduct surprise inspections in and around government and private institutions, discouraging such practices in the future and prioritizing the safety and security of all students. This approach aims to maintain discipline, morality, and decency within school premises and their surroundings.
“Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, SSP Traffic City, and SSP Traffic Rural have been requested to intensify surprise checks on motorcycle and scooter riders. They should intercept underage students who are not wearing helmets or do not possess driving licenses, and are below the age of 18. This strong action will help combat this menace and ensure strict adherence to traffic rules and the rule of law,” the statement concluded. (KNO)
