Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and eminent jurist Mufti Bhahau-ul-Din Farooqi passed away Saturday morning.

A lawyer, jurist and political figure Farooqi served as the 12th Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir from March 7, 1983 to August 23, 1983.

He also served as Chairman of the People Basic Rights Commission, an independent organization dedicated to the purpose of actively investigating human rights violations in Kashmir, and seeking prosecution.

A powerful writer and a passionate human rights activist, Farooqi wrote fearlessly to expose the harsh abuses against Kashmir.

Justice Farooqi is survived by his daughter, three sons Advocate Mufti Showkat, Dr. Mufti Mahmood and Dr. Saadat Mufti.

His Nimaz-e-Jinazah was attended by a large number of people at Khanqah-e- Moulla in old Srinagar.
