The state Congress here on Sunday launched a scathing attack on its ally in coalition government National Conference accusing it of burning the Congress flags at Martyrs’ graveyard, old city ahead of the congregational prayers.

The senior state Congress vice- president Muzaffar Parray stated that it was ironical to see Congress flags torn up in pieces with some burned to dust by none other than national conference. “When we reached the martyrs graveyard to pay tributes to July 13 martyrs, we were disheartened to see our flags burned by the national conference,” he told KNS, adding that the situation could have turned ugly but the leaders prevailed over the Congress supporters.

Castigating the NC policies, Parray stated that NC is involved in ‘flag politics’ and is hell bent upon exploiting peoples’ emotions at large in valley. “Such actions cannot be tolerated. The time is gone when leaves were shown with some names inscribed.”

The Congress vice-president maintained that they sought time for offering congregational prayers to the July 13 martyrs and the district administration gave them the time slot of 8.35 in the morning. “We reached the old city on time but what we witnessed at the graveyard was indeed incorrigible- the Congress flags were burned down by the national conference and our activists revealed that during the early morning hours, NC directed their men for carrying out such action. Even we have reports that administration was in hand in glove with the National Conference in carrying such action.”

He maintained that the congress later on held a detailed meet over the issue wherein it was unanimously decided that the high command shall be informed about such actions of NC and that it will be intimated to them that how long the Congress has to bear the ‘burden of the sin’.

He accused further that several Congress workers were stopped by the administration to reach the venue and that the plot is being set to cause damage to Congress party in the state.

District authorities meanwhile said that no such incident took place in the area and there was no Congress flag hoisted anywhere in the venue.
