The ‘Scholarship Scam’ that was unearthed by police in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajouri has badly hit the functioning of the University as from past 11 days the students amid massive protests against tainted officials have been boycotting the classes.
The protesting students both male and females Wednesday took out a massive march in the premises of the University demanding immediate removal of the officials involved in the Scholar Scam. The protesting students alleged that the incumbent Registrar of the University Rashid Chowdary is directly involved in the scam and due to his affiliation with some politicians, the government has spared him and allowed him to continue in the University.
“From last 8 years he (Ab Rashid Chowdary) has been working as Registrar in the University and despite surfacing scams after scams, no action has been initiated against him,” the protesting students told CNS. They alleged that the University is lacking all the facilities. “There is no sanitation facilities, no hi-tech classrooms. No proper food is served in the hostels despite the facts students are being charged heavily. You will not believe, even a ceiling fan is not available in any classroom,” they said.
Pertinently, after receiving a letter from bank about a scam, police had registered a case under FIR No. 46/2015 U/S 420, 468, 409, 467, 472 and 109 RPC. During the course of investigation it was found that in the garb of scholarships, an amount to the tune of Rs 15 lakhs has been swindled by BSBGS University authorities in connivance of a Bank employee Ajaz Malik, a resident of Darhal. After the arrest of Malik, the case was handed over to Special Investigating Team (SIT) that besides scrutinizing the University documents seized over twenty suspicious cheques and some other record from Jammu and Kashmir Bank Branch of Reki Baan Darhal.
During scrutiny of the record of the University and Bank, a new scandal surfaced after two cheques pertaining to some purchases of stationary items, worth over Rs 4.28 lakh were found withdrawn on two firms from Darhal branch of J&K Bank. After investigation it was found that such purchases were never made and the firms existed nowhere while they were shown Rajouri and Jammu based.
The students Wednesday threatened that if no action against the tainted officials is not taken, they will took to streets and will stage protests outside the University on daily basis. “Some Professors are warning us of punishment. Even a Professor warned us that he will not provide them required marks needed to qualify a subject if we continue to stage protest. These Professors are also part of the ‘dirty greedy game’. Till tainted officials are not removed and exposed, we will not end our strike. All the money meant for the renovation and well-being of the students is being swindled. It is big mafia here and we want government to punish this mafia,” the protesting students said.
Vice Chancellor BGSBU, Professor Irshad Ahmed Hamal refused to comment on the issue while Registrar Abdul Rashid Chowdary did not respond to repeated phone calls.
