Hours after the state government announced examinations be conducted in October, parents across Kashmir while expressing concern said the decision would make the students suffer more.
The government on Monday declared that it has restored the academic session in the educational institutions of Kashmir division and winter zone of Jammu division as it used to be prior to the September 2014 floods.
“Responding to the public queries regarding change in academic calendar, the Education Department today made it clear that the academic session in the educational institutions of Kashmir division and the winter zone of Jammu division shall remain as it used to be prior to the September 2014 floods,” declares the official order.
“How could the students appear in exams in October when their new classes have started just a short while ago? The students are at present appearing in the unit teats being conducted at the school level. It is indeed ironic that how come such an order was issued in a mid-session,” Masood Ahmad, a Srinagar resident asked.
Parents added that to conduct the exams in October, the government has asked the schools to take extra classes which would directly hit the children in schools. “Is this humanly possible that a class 8th or 10th student will take extra classes apart from the already much incomplete syllabus and then we expect that the system of education would flourish in Kashmir,” Sameena Yousuf, a teacher in one of the private schools told KNS.
It was informed further that the sudden order in which the government declared that examinations up to 10+2 level would be now again conducted in October-November instead of March-April, as was done as a special dispensation after September 2014, is going to affect the academics at large with extra burden being put on students would further make the situation turbulent and chaotic.
“The government instead of issuing this sudden order should have taken private schools and other concerned people on board. It should have already intimated the people in March or –April that from the next session, examinations would be held in October,” the parents said, adding that the order has sent shock waves across in the education system which already is in shambles in Kashmir.
There were others who ridiculed the government for not considering the summer vacations for the school going kids. “How can a five or seven year old kid beat this hot summer without break and attend classes. When there is already a system in vogue, what was the need to overhaul it all of a sudden?” asked Zahoor Ahmad, a parent residing in north Kashmir.
Pertinently, in order to cover the loss of time due to extended academic session of 2014-15, government on Monday declared that there shall be no summer vacation in the educational institutions of Kashmir division and Winter Zone of Jammu division this year.
