SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has raised concerns over an impending water crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, urging both the government and residents to take proactive measures to address the issue.
In a post on X, Abdullah highlighted that the crisis has been developing for several years and stressed the need for a comprehensive response. “JK is staring at a water crisis this year. It’s not a recent phenomenon, actually, it’s been building up for a few years now,” he said.

“While the government will have to adopt a more proactive approach for water management & conservation, it can’t just be a government-centric approach. All of us residents of J&K will have to change the way we take water for granted,” he added.
Abdullah further announced his plans to personally review the measures being planned by the Jal Shakti (Public Health Engineering) Department. “I’ll be reviewing the measures the Jal Shakti (PHE) Dept intends to take to deal with the developing crisis & I’ll also be talking to the people of J&K over the next few months about what we can do collectively,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir, heavily dependent on glaciers and rivers, has been witnessing erratic weather patterns, depleting water resources, and rising demand. Experts have consistently warned of the need for sustainable water management strategies to prevent severe shortages in the future.
